In late 1988, the 5th generation of the popular Toyota Hilux compact truck debuted; however, since very few '88's with the new, rounded body style were imported to North America, 1989 is the first year that any quantity of them were seen. Over twenty years later, many '89's are still on the road, yet remain relatively rare in AK, especially in this truck's condition! This body style remained virtually unchanged for six years, until the Tacoma in 1995. This truck has been a safe and dependable vehicle that has served me well. The only reason I'm selling it now is because we are moving out of state.
We bought the truck in 1993 and have taken very good care of it, performing the scheduled maintenance, changing the oil every 2,000 miles to 3,000 miles, repairing things before they broke, and keeping it in the garage most winter nights. I've held on to all my receipts and can provide a record of repairs. Repairs and preventative maintenance have averaged a little under $1000/year, which is very reasonable. Beware of owners who brag they "haven't spent a dime" on their vehicles. That most likely means there's deferred maintenance waiting for the unfortunate buyer! With this Toyota, you will know what you are getting.
Everything works well on the truck. In winter, with studded tires and the 250 lb. steel plate cut to fit the bed, the 4 X 4 gives excellent traction on ice and snow. The 5-speed manual transmission, 2-speed transfer case and locking hubs work flawlessly, and the 4 X 4 can be engaged on the "fly." Whether on ice & snow, beaches, bogs, or rocky hills, both high gear and "granny" low work great!
It's still a fine-looking truck with absolutely zero body rust and just a couple minor dings to its dark red body. I've replaced a few body parts -- tail light lenses and assemblies (have a new one still in the box), mud flaps, headlights, and the rear bumper.

Worst ding!
It comes with a matching mid-rise cap by Leer, and a bed liner. Between the '93 purchase date and 1995, a new wiring harness was put in to solve some persistent electrical glitches, the rear springs were reconditioned and beefed up, a U-Haul tow package (lifetime warranty) was installed and wired for a trailer and four, heavy-duty Monroe shock absorbers were mounted.
The 3.0 liter, V6 engine has given me absolutely no trouble whatsoever. It gets 18 to 22 M.P.G. and runs great, from a mere crawl in granny low to 70-mph+ on the highway. I've put an average of around 7000 miles a year on the truck, and the odometer now stands at just over 180,000 miles. It has power steering and power-assisted brakes (no power windows or antenna, tachometer CD player, or A/C).
The grey interior is in excellent condition. Its front seat is a split "bench" type with dark-grey, fabric upholstery, leatherette headrests, and a fold-down armrest. In the rear are jump seats with seat belts and a sliding rear window. It has "street-legal," tinted glass on the door windows and the windshield was replaced in 1999 (it has a 3" crack at the lower-left corner, mostly covered by the I/M sticker. Novus Glass "treated" the crack in 2009). It has the original AM/FM radio with cassette player. Its speakers were replaced about ten years ago (a receipt I don't have). It has a double cup holder and a tilt wheel. The heater and defroster work great. The original owner's manual is in the glove box and an unused jack is in its compartment under the passenger-side jump seat; its spare tire nestles beneath the gas tank (I've never had to use it).
Both summer and winter tires have plenty of wear left. The National Commando XT summer tires are mounted on alloy wheels and the Hankook studs on standard, metallic grey rims.
Last year I put in a new radiator and brakes, this year the Monroe shock absorbers originally installed in 1995 were replaced on warranty; the exhaust system is from Muffler City and also has a lifetime warranty.
When work is needed, I recommend Arctic Import Repair. With few exceptions, I've had most of the work done there or at the Toyota dealership, and I've had better service and results from Arctic.
In order to establish a fair price for this excellent truck, I explored Craigslist, eBay Auto, and other Internet resources. Prices ranged between $3500 and $6000. Given the truck's very good condition, its repair record, Leer cap, tow package, mounted winter tires, and other extras, a median price of $4750 would be fair and reasonable, but we need to sell it ASAP, so I've priced it at $3250.
If you need a safe, dependable, versatile, relatively economical and good-looking vehicle under $4K, this Toyota may fill the bill. People often mistake this truck for a much newer one -- when I tell them how old it really is, they say that I must have spent a lot to "cherry" it out. But I haven't. Just taken care of things as they came up. Its inherently good "bones" have done the rest. I don't think you can go wrong paying full price for this vehicle, but I'm open to negotiation. I will turn the keys over to the new owner on June 30. Will that be you?
